Algonquin Thunder (6-1)
It doesn’t come as a huge surprise to see Algonquin leading the east region in women’s basketball at the regular season halfway mark.
Algonquin has led the standings at the December break the past four seasons. Although there is no guarantee of a regional title (see last season as exhibit “A”), it looks all but certain that the Thunder will take one of the top two spots in the final standings, and receive a bye directly into the OCAA championship, an event in which Algonquin has medaled the past five years.
Algonquin’s lone blemish thus far was a 66-64 defeat at Durham in late November. The Thunder won six times by an average margin of 20 points, and should feel comfortable heading into their final seven games beginning on Jan. 15. The Thunder have a perfect 4-0 record on home court.
Second-year guard Amoney Abakar (Hamilton) is sixth in OCAA scoring averaging 15.9 points per game to lead all Thunder players.
